Pepper Sprays

Choosing the Right Pepper Spray Formula

Not all pepper spray is the same. Stream formulas shoot a direct line and reduce wind blowback — a solid choice for outdoor carry. Gel formulas stick on contact, travel farther, and are a better option indoors or in tight spaces. Fog and cone sprays cover a wider area but are more sensitive to wind. Know where you're most likely to use it before you pick a formula.

Size and Carry Style Matter More Than You Think

A pepper spray you leave at home because it's too bulky doesn't protect you. Keychain canisters fit on your keys so it's always with you. Belt-clip and purse models are quick to grab when you need them. Larger units with higher shot counts make sense in a car or nightstand drawer. Match the size to where you'll carry it, and you'll actually have it when it counts.

What You Can Count On When You Shop Here

Every pepper spray we carry comes from manufacturers who test their products for consistency and reliability. I don't stock anything I wouldn't hand to someone in my own family. You'll find accurate descriptions, real specifications, and honest information about what each product does. If you have a question before you buy, reach out — there's a real person here ready to answer it. Check your state and local laws before purchasing or carrying pepper spray, because regulations vary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pepper Sprays

How does pepper spray work?

Pepper spray contains oleoresin capsicum, a compound derived from hot peppers. When sprayed at a person's face, it causes immediate eye pain, temporary vision impairment, and difficulty breathing. These effects are temporary and give you time to escape. It is not a permanent injury and works on most people regardless of pain tolerance.

What is the difference between pepper spray stream and pepper gel?

A stream formula shoots a narrow line of liquid, similar to a squirt gun, and is accurate at close range with reduced blowback in wind. Pepper gel is thicker, sticks to whatever it contacts, travels up to 20 percent farther, and is less likely to spread in the air indoors. Gel is often recommended for enclosed spaces; stream works well outside.

Is pepper spray legal to carry where I live?

Pepper spray is legal in most U.S. states but regulations on canister size, formula strength, and who can carry it vary by state and sometimes by city. I can't give legal advice, and this isn't legal advice — always check your state and local laws before you buy or carry pepper spray.

How far does pepper spray shoot?

Range depends on the formula and canister size. Most keychain and compact pepper sprays have an effective range of 6 to 10 feet. Larger units and gel formulas can reach 12 to 18 feet. Always check the product specifications so you know what to expect before you need it.

Does pepper spray expire?

Yes. Most canisters have a shelf life of two to four years, printed on the label. An expired canister may have reduced pressure or potency and may not perform when it matters. Replace your pepper spray before it expires and periodically test-fire a brief burst to confirm it's pressurized and working.

Can I carry pepper spray on a keychain?

Many people do, and it's one of the best carry habits because the spray goes wherever your keys go. We carry a full selection of keychain pepper spray designed for that exact purpose — compact, secure, and quick to access. Make sure you know how to remove the safety and deploy it before you're ever in a situation where you need it.
